Estonia has over 40 ports, most of these being for trade. The Port of Tallinn (www.portoftallinn.com) is the largest.
A ferry runs between Helsinki and Tallinn with departures around every few hours (more frequent between May and September); the route is operated by Tallink (tel: 640 9808; www.tallink.ee) and Tallink Silja (tel: 631 8320; www.tallinksilja.com/en) and the crossing takes under 2 hours. Tallink also run a daily ferry service once a day between Stockholm and Tallinn ports which takes 15 hours. Passengers must take a passport or some form of ID before travelling. Estonia is a popular stop in the summer for cruise ship itineraries touring the Baltics, Russia and Scandinavia. Fred Olsen (www.fredolsencruises.com), Oceania (www.oceaniacruises.com) and P&O Cruises (www.pocruises.com) all call at Port of Tallinn. Getting There by Rail
There are no direct international rail routes except for two routes running from Russia; there are no connecting trains running from Western Europe through to the Baltic states. The Tallinna Express daily overnight train from Moscow is run by GoRail (www.gorail.ee) and takes 15 hours. A new addition is the express train from St Petersburg to Tallinn, which takes 5 hours. However, it’s possible to do the journey from Western Europe to Tallinn by train via an indirect route. Trains going via Copenhagen and Sweden, or via Germany and Finland can connect to ferries which transfer to Tallinn. Both journeys take around three nights.
Note
If travelling between Russian and the EU remember to check visa and documentation requirements well before travelling.
